Blood on the veil

Christ is waiting with longing desire for the manifestation of Himself in His church. When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come to claim them as His own. – {COL 69.1}

We all know the statement, but Why is this the case?

Hebrews 8:1-2 (KJV)
Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; [2] A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

There is a sanctuary in heaven, of which the earthly was a copy.

Exodus 25:40 (KJV)
And look that thou make them after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount.

Along with the construction of the temple in the wilderness was the ministration and the priesthood. This Priesthood included many service including those which the 7 annual feast days were part.

Daniel 8:14 (KJV)
And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

As the Spring feasts were fulfilled at Christ’s first advent, the cleansing of the sanctuary being one of the autumn feasts finds its fulfillment in the events near Christ’s second advent. As Adventists we know this prophecy finds its culmination in October 22, 1844. But how can anything in heaven need cleaning, is it not perfect and without spot?

What then is the sanctuary being cleansed of?

Leviticus 4:13-17 (KJV)
And if the whole congregation of Israel sin through ignorance, and the thing be hid from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done somewhat against any of the commandments of the Lord concerning things which should not be done, and are guilty; [14] When the sin, which they have sinned against it, is known, then the congregation shall offer a young bullock for the sin, and bring him before the tabernacle of the congregation. [15] And the elders of the congregation shall lay their hands upon the head of the bullock before the Lord : and the bullock shall be killed before the Lord . [16] And the priest that is anointed shall bring of the bullock’s blood to the tabernacle of the congregation: [17] And the priest shall dip his finger in some of the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the Lord , even before the vail.

For eighteen centuries this work of ministration continued in the first apartment of the sanctuary. The blood of Christ, pleaded in behalf of penitent believers, secured their pardon and acceptance with the Father, yet their sins still remained upon the books of record. As in the typical service there was a work of atonement at the close of the year, so before Christ’s work for the redemption of men is completed, there is a work of atonement for the removal of sin from the sanctuary. This is the service which began when the 2300 days ended. At that time, as foretold by Daniel the prophet, our High Priest entered the most holy, to perform the last division of his solemn work,—to cleanse the sanctuary. – {GC88 421.2}

As anciently the sins of the people were by faith placed upon the sin-offering, and through its blood transferred, in figure, to the earthly sanctuary, so in the new covenant the sins of the repentant are by faith placed upon Christ, and transferred, in fact, to the heavenly sanctuary. And as the typical cleansing of the earthly was accomplished by the removal of the sins by which it had been polluted, so the actual cleansing of the heavenly is to be accomplished by the removal, or blotting out, of the sins which are there recorded. But, before this can be accomplished, there must be an examination of the books of record to determine who, through repentance of sin, and faith in Christ, are entitled to the benefits of his atonement. The cleansing of the sanctuary therefore involves a work of investigation,—a work of judgment. This work must be performed prior to the coming of Christ to redeem his people; for when he comes, his reward is with him to give to every man according to his works. [Revelation 22:12.] – {GC88 421.3}

So we can see by faith that as we sin, Christ’s blood is sprinkled against the veil in the heavenly Sanctuary, this is  the record of our sin and as we continue in this sin, the sanctuary will continue to require work of our high priest to cleans it. Just as the daily ministration continued on the day of atonement in the Jewish economy, the forgiveness for sins continues while living in the anti-typical day of atonement. But there will come a time when that work will cease and the decree will be made.

Revelation 22:11 (KJV)
He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.

And so, the Gospel is ordained that we might be purified and made without spot of blemish that Christs work in cleansing the record our sins in the heavenly sanctuary may be complete. This is the purpose of the Gospel as expounded in Ephesians chapter 4

Ephesians 4:11-13
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

The 3 angels messages, 1833, 1844 and 1848 culminate in a sanctified people spoken of in Revelation chapter 14. They have grown and reached the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.

Revelation 14:12 (KJV)
Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

And they are none other than the 144,000 as you can read of in the preceding verses.

It then becomes clear why that Jesus can’t return yet, It’s because those who will accept the Gospel of salvation have not year grown up fully into those worthy of the name Christian, that is to say Like Christ. We need to be Christians in deed and not merely name and this is achieved by Faith. Righteousness, that is to say right doing is a fruit of faith that will be manifest in the life of every true Christian.

Let us strive with all the power that God has given us to be among the hundred and forty-four thousand. And let us do all that we can to help others to gain heaven. We are to have an intense interest in Christ Jesus; for he is our Saviour. He came to this world to be tempted in all points as we are, to prove to the universe that in this world of sin human beings can live lives that God will approve. – {RH March 9, 1905 Par. 4}
